Academy of Biomedical Sciences (PLTW)
The Academy of Biomedical Sciences provides students interested in science and medicine with a rigorous, immersive, project-based learning experience. Students engage in the role of biomedical professionals as they conduct in-depth investigations in the fields of human medicine, physiology, genetics, microbiology, and public health. Students examine the structures and interactions of human body systems and explore the prevention, diagnosis, and treatment of disease. Emphasis is placed on professionalism and the development of transportable skills including critical thinking, effective communication, ethical reasoning, and collaboration. Through partnerships with Hagerstown Community College and the University of Florida, students have the opportunity to earn college credits and industry related certification to help build their future careers in science and healthcare.

Avionics and Mechatronics Engineering
This program is designed to teach students hands on skills and real-world techniques for designing products using manufacturing tools and learning experiences in preparation for the work force or college. The class is built around Amatrol curriculum and uses mechatronics trainers for hands on experience. The opportunity to earn certifications by working with the trainers is possible during class. The class is aligned with HCC with the possibility to earn college credits. Other areas of content are robotics, CNC Machining, Inventor, and metal fabrication.

Cosmetology
The cosmetology program provides students with the foundational skills and knowledge needed for a career in the beauty industry. Students learn practical techniques in hair styling, manicures, pedicures, and skincare, while working on clients in a student-run salon setting. The curriculum covers salon management, sanitation, and client communication, preparing students for state licensure exams. This hands-on training allows students to earn a Maryland Cosmetology license while still in high school, giving them a head start on their professional journey.

The Electrical Construction program students receive training in the electrical wiring field and learn how to wire a house, store or office. Students also learn how to wire alarm systems. After completing the program students have the opportunity to become a registered apprentice electrician.

Engineering
The Engineering Academy offers juniors and seniors a hands-on introduction to real-world engineering concepts and practices. Students engage in project-based learning that emphasizes the engineering design process, creativity, and collaboration. Students will create prototypes through the use of 3D printers, lasers, electronics, soldering, robotics, and more. The curriculum also prepares students for certification in CAD or computer-aided design.

Fire and Rescue Academy
The Fire & Rescue Academy program is sponsored by the University of Maryland Fire & Rescue Institute (MFRI), and the Washington County Volunteer Fire & Rescue Association. Successful completion of the program can offer up to 16 college credit from the University of Maryland through ACES towards a fire science or emergency management degree. Cadets will have the opportunity of becoming certified Maryland Emergency Medical Technicians, Firefighters I and II, Hazardous Materials Operations, Rescue Technicians and many other fire and rescue classes. This program affords cadets the opportunity to meet all pre-requisites for employment by any career Fire Department.

Homeland Security – Information Technologies
In their junior year, this pathway will provide students with an in-depth understanding of Homeland Security and supporting technologies, like geographic information systems, for the 21st century. Students will learn the evolution of Homeland Security, the issues and preventative measures around securing our nation’s cyber infrastructure, and some technology applications to combat those 21st century threats. In their senior year, students will explore the role of electronic evidence and methods to investigate computer/cyberthreats and the application of drones and unmanned systems to support the Homeland Security mission. Students will take the Emergency Telecommunicator exam and the FAA part-107 commercial drone certification exam. By completing this pathway, students will earn at least 13 college credits, eight high school credits and multiple professional certifications.

IT Networking Academy and CISCO Courses
Students in the Computer Networking and Cybersecurity program gain skills to prepare for certifications like the Cisco Certified Support Technician Networking and CompTIA Security+. The program includes hands-on experience with configuring routers, switches, and other networking equipment, as well as cyber range activities that allow students to conduct and defend against cyber attacks. This program can be the gateway to many options after high school! Some students continue on to two and four year colleges pursing a wide variety of studies including computer science and bioinformatics. The certifications students have the opportunity to prepare for can be a gateway into the workforce including for positions that require certification specified in the DoD 8140 qualification matrices. For students interested in military service some Military Occupational Specialties also require certifications that you will have the oportunity to prepare for during this program.
